March is the Time for Gardening!

We have a list of fun projects for you and your garden! If you are in the frost-free regions of the country, you can begin working on your landscaping and gardening at the end of March. Warm, seasonal annuals such as begonias can begin planting. If you are further north, you can begin planting cool season items like pansy and alyssum. If a frost should arise, be sure and cover anything you’ve planted!

Before getting your hands in the dirt, get them covered as well! Our Workman’s Friend Barrier Skin Cream will protect your hands from dirt and grime, making clean-up of your hands quick and easy. The barrier protection also shields your skin from plant oils such as poison ivy. Our barrier protection will make your gardening experience more enjoyable and memorable.

Here are gardening activities for the month of March.

1. Plant Annual
You can begin planting annuals in frost-free zones at the end of March. Annuals such as wax begonia, geraniums. Impatiens, and marigolds can add a splash of color to your yard. Be sure and plant annuals as directed by your nursery.

 2. Plant Trees and Shrubs
Trees and shrubs love to be planted when the air is a little cool and moist. Spring is the best opportunity to get these plants into the ground. Once the air heats up after spring is over, trees and shrubs have a harder time taking root. Always dig a hole slightly larger that your spread of the roots and soak with plenty of water after initial plant.

3. Plant Berries
I love planting strawberries in March! Personally, I use a wire basket which I elevate on a stand. The stand helps keep ants away. All kinds of berries can be planted now as well. Other berry varieties for planting in March include raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. Check with your nursery before purchasing to make sure the berries you plant are compatible with your region of the country.

4. Plant Vegetables
Depending on your region of the country, seeds can be planted for all sorts of delicious vegetables like lettuce, spinach, peas, tomatoes, and squash. Check the information on the seed’s packaging for regional information and planting recommendations. There is nothing better than fresh vegetables from your own garden!

5. Feed Camellias and Azaleas
I have camellias at home which are fed every March. The extra care I take has my plants blooming longer than the normal timespan. I feed them monthly through August. The mixture of nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium will also increase your plants’ ability to tolerate cold weather.

If you do venture out to your garden, or if you decide to tackle your landscaping after this record breaking winter, be sure and BARRIER UP!
