Looking for a fun, outdoor activity? Berry picking is a lot of fun and a great way to entertain young children. There are many farms around the country that will allow you to pick all the berries you want for a small fee. Workman’s Friend would like to offer you a few tips so you can enjoy an amazing afternoon with nature.
1. LOOK UP A FARM
Begin by searching “berry picking” in an internet search engine. You will need to set an appointment ahead of time as most farms only allow so many visitors per day. Check the 5-day weather forecast in advance of setting up your appointment.
2. THE EARLIER THE BETTER
Plan on arriving at the farm just after opening. This will allow you to get the prime picks of the day. Most importantly, it will allow you to pick in the cooler time of the day. Also, you will experience bigger crowds as the day progresses.
3. BRING YOUR OWN BASKET
The farm will charge you for all the extra supplies at a premium rental fee. Be sure to check out the dollar store a day or two before the harvest.
4. STAY HYDRATED
Bring plenty of water. You will be out in the sun the entire time. You will lose track of time very easily and become dehydrated quicker than you will realize.
5. WEAR COOL CLOTHES
Dress for a day on the farm. Wear good, comfortable shoes and dress for a hot day. Bring plenty of sun block as well.
6. WASH THE BERRIES
Be sure and wash the berries very good when you get home. Use a vinegar and water bath to eliminate any mold. Then wash again in fresh water.
7. APPLY BARRIER PROTECTION
Before you pick any berries, BARRIER UP! Apply a coating of Workman’s Friend Barrier Skin Cream to make cleanup of your hands much easier. The barrier protection will also protect you from skin irritants like Poison Ivy! Purchase a tube today on our website HERE.
