Beat the Heat – Tips for staying cool this summer

Summer heat is spiking and there is no relief in sight… or is there? We here at Workman’s Friend have compiled a list of actions you can take to help beat the heat which negatively affects our bodies. The following tips will help keep you safer and healthier.

1. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER
There is nothing better than a cool glass of water to rehydrate your body during the heat of the day. Steer clear of sugary beverages, alcohol and drinks with caffeine.

2. DON’T WIPE OFF THE SWEAT
You’re body sweats for a reason. Sweating is your body’s natural way of cooling down. Don’t wipe it away too quickly. Let your body cool down first. If you find you’ve stopped sweating, your body is now telling you that you are in trouble. Please hydrate by drinking water immediately.

3. IT IS CURTAINS FOR YOU!
Keep the inside of your house cooler by closing the curtains to all of your windows. Not only will you help make the house cooler, but you will be spending less money on your electric bill. Why? Well, it’s because your air conditioner will not have to work as hard.

4. A FROZEN FAN
No, I am not telling you to watch that movie your kids love. This is actually a COOL little tip. If you have an electric fan that you are using to cool off with, try this! In advance, freeze a full plastic water bottle. Place this frozen water bottle in front of the fan and enjoy the extra cool breeze you’ll be experiencing!

5. AVOID COOKING INSIDE
Your oven produces a lot of heat. Use a crockpot instead which does not expel a lot of heat. Reducing the heat in your kitchen will help with the air conditioner’s bills.

6. USE DISHWASHER AT NIGHT
Your dishwasher produces a lot of heat. Adjust your schedule and have the dishwasher running in the early morning and late evening hours. Running the dishwasher in the evening hours is best. This way if you need a second run, you can wash a second load early in the morning before the heat of the day hits and warms up your home’s interior.

7. TIME YOUR EXERCISE
If you walk or job daily for your health, schedule your healthy activity for early in the morning or later in the evening. Once the heat of the day hits, the summer can take its toll on your body. Getting out for your exercise early in the morning is best. Listening to the birds chirping in the trees is inspiring and getting your exercise out of the way early frees up the rest of your day!
