How to Celebrate National Dog Day

They are man and (woman’s) best friend. They keep us safe from intruders, provide comfort to patients in hospitals, and are a great way to meet that person at the park you’ve been meaning to ask out on a date. We’re talking about dogs and on August 26th America will be celebrating National Dog Day. That’s right our furry four-legged friends have their own holiday. In fact, this day is observed around the globe as World Dog Day and International Dog Day. At Workman’s Friend we are huge dog lovers and want to offer you a couple of examples of how to observe this day.

Adopt a Dog

One of the best ways to celebrate this holiday is to adopt a dog. Founder of National Dog Day Colleen Paige urges potential pet owners to go to their local animal shelter to find one. She wants people to avoid buying dogs from local pet shops where they often come from puppy mills. These types of animal breeders are known for their harsh and inhumane conditions. Paige also argues that no dog should be discriminated. Many older ones and certain breeds such as pit bulls are the last ones to be adopted and are more often than not to euthanized.

Unfortunately, many rescue dogs have suffered tremendous abuse, malnourishment, and come with health problems (i.e. heart worm). Some can even come with skin conditions due to bugs such as flees. Your local vet will be able to provide solutions on how to treat these ailments. Often these measures require creams and certain dog washing agents. The best way to protect your hands from these harsh chemicals is by applying a thin layer of Workman’s Friend Barrier Skin Cream. Our non-irritating cream will act as an invisible barrier shielding your hands from the irritants and drying agents often associated with these types of dog treatments.

Treat your dog

We mean treat your dog to a gift or particular treat they may like. Whether it’s a dog walk in their favorite park, a swim in the local creek, a special toy from the store, even their favorite meal (steak is a popular choice). National Dog Day is an opportunity to acknowledge how much you love and enjoy your four-legged friend.

Throw a party

Whether you decide on an outdoor barbecue at your house or a potluck in the park on National Dog Day invite all your friends who are dog owners to your event. It will be a fun opportunity to allow you and your respective animals to socialize. You can even buy cookies in the shape of dogs or barbecue hot dogs (yes, we had to mention it). The most important thing about this day is to gather your friends and family with their pets. I mean, who doesn’t love an excuse to have a barbecue?

Take your dog for a visit

We don’t mean just any visit we’re referring to visit the people who need it the most: people who are sick or the elderly. Though many hospitals and senior homes have specific rules and regulations regarding pets, take the time to inform yourself. This is an opportunity cheer someone up not to mention it will allow your dog to do something they do best: provide unconditional love.

Don’t forget to apply a layer of Workman’s Friend Barrier Skin Cream before you go. Most hospitals and long-term assisted care facilities require all visitors to wash their hands thoroughly and use sanitizing gel. Both of these products are harsh on hands. Using our cream will protect them from the drying and irritating effects of these agents.

A woof of appreciation

As National Dog Day quickly approaches it’s time plan a party, buy the treat, research adoption or organize a visit. It might not seem like a big deal to you, but we’re certain the dog or future dog in your life is already counting down the days!
